How to start building a motion simulator

Postby Raceray on 24.03.2009, 16:24

Hi guys,

think a universal repositoy and link directory persistent staying on top of the "How to Start" section would be a great help for every newcomer who wants to get in contact with the x-simulator and got the intention to make his own motion simulator. Let us collect only the most helpfull posts to give our newbies a good start.

That thread should be updated as regularly as possible. If you think you got useful informations, publish the link and write a short description for them, i will publish it here in the first post.

My suggestion for the content directory:

Source of supply - Where to find electronic parts and mechanical components

Hardware - DIY Simulator projects

Electronic - actuators and motors

Electronic - Motordrivers

Electronic - interfaces and motordriver

Electronic - Gauges, steering wheels, gadgets and features

Electronic - sites to learn more about electronic, for basic and enhanced skills

Source of supply - Where to find electronic parts and mechanical components

Nice job Rene, however, are you going to put in the Pololu JRK motor driver as well? http://www.filehosting.org/file/details ... _Lane.docx
And maybe this as a motor http://www.motiondynamics.com.au/worm-d ... orque.html

Hi guys,

I have done quite a bit of reading in preparation to start building my simulator cockpit. Basically the idea is to build a Spitfire Mk V on a motion platform. I would like to try and model the interior as close to authentic as I can. I am planning on interfacing with IL2 Sturmovik and would like to control as many functions as possible from the cockpit.

Here is the question; Am I correct in thinking that in order to drive the motion platform I need the following chain / link of systems:
(1) IL2 Sturmovik to (2) Force Sender to (3) Force Profiler to (4) Tronic's AMC motor motion controller to (5) DMS H-Bridge to (6) DC / Wiper Motors to move the platform, then (6) Position Sensors back to (4).

Secondly, how can I calculate / estimate the current that a motor will draw when moving a certain load. I think I would like to build Tronic's controller and H-bridge but will need to check the ratings. I will try and work with good center of gravity for the Pitch and Roll motors but the Heave and Surge motors may need a bit more current to move the cockpit (with me in it :-)

Thirdly, can I get information out of IL2 to drive Guages. If so, which guages, lights etc. can be driven? Is the process more or less the same as that outlined above, with Servo motors replacing the DC / Wiper Motors?

Sorry about all the questions, but I am really getting exited to start out :D By the way, does anybody know where I can get good and complete working drawings for a Spitfire V cockpit, say from frame 5 to frame 13?

All the best, L
All the calculations show it can't work. There's only one thing to do: make it work.
