What Is a Mathematically Correct Profile and Why Do I Care?

New postby bvillersjr on 06.01.2009, 03:42

I've been spending alot of time creating profiles and evaluating the profiles of others. Here are some of my observations & tips:

1.) Everyone seems to be trying to make their profile "mathematically correct", but they are oversimplifying what this means imho. You cannot divide a profile's X,Y & Z axis into 100% and expect realistic movement.

For example Lat-50%, Vert 10%, Long-40% will aloways result in limited movement and a profile that does not feel as realistic as it could imho.

My latest Race 07 profile uses a Lat-90%/Vert-10%/Long-85% split! At first glance this would seem absurd since you cannot use more than 100% of an axis. While it is possible that this profile can use more than 100% and that some effects will be lost, it isn't likely. I know this because of the logging feature added into the latest version of X-Sim 2 Beta and because of some quick common sense thinking. Realistically, how often will I have full braking and cornering at the exact same time? The answer according to my log data is almost never.

IMHO, it is best to design for the peak combined values, not the peak individual values. The point is, why design for a 100% braking / 100% Cornering scenario if I never actually utilize more than 10% braking / 90% cornering? The logging mechanism will allow you to see your actual COMBINED utilizations and you can optimize your profile for those scenarios, not scenarios that should never occur.

What if they do occur though? In my above example, it would be possible to lose acceleration/braking effects if I was using 100% of my cornering and vertical effects. Frankly if I am using 100% of my vertical and cornering effects, and apply my brake, it doesnt matter anyway, I'M GOING TO WRECK :D

2.) There is a way to get perfect laps without having to drive them yourself! Set the AI strength to 110% and let them drive a few laps for you while the profiler is recording min/max values. Be careful though, AI guys wreck too, just not as often. Make sure the AI driver gives you a perfect lap.

Hope this helps someone, in making their profiles.

The thing with 100 % is complete right. If i use the 40+40+20 its doesnt feel that good as when i use the 100 +80 +x. With settings like this your arse is moving more when accelerating or braking while cornering. With the 40+40+x you realize a little bit, not more.
