street-view capturing technique for racetracks

New postby egoexpress on 06.03.2010, 14:33

Just stumbled over this.

They are using a vehicle with 360° cameras (similar to google street-view), but with an additional road/enviroment laser scanning device.

Check out their website and the BBC documentation!

Though it seems pretty much alpha still, it looks quite promising.

However, I rather would want them to sell their captured tracks to experienced racing game developers. I guess they are not experienced enough to produce a game with good physics and immersion like the GTR-series, Rfactor or Iracing.

game demo (beta)

A great concept and it still needs a lot of work. Microsoft had some development on a program that takes photos of any object and create a very accurate 3D model.

I agree with you ego, people taking pictures shouldn't be making a racing sim game :)

Iracing is already taking lots of photos and uses a laserscanner for their tracks ...
Here a little story when they where in australia scanning Phillip island and oran park

I hope the Nordschleife will be captuered that way (with laser and pics) soon.
The currently virtualized tracks arent capable of reproducing the hefty track altitude differences and road surface details that well.
So far the Nordschleife tracks are too planar, and miss the most surface irregularities on the road, which make this track so dangerous and demanding.

Watch the videos to see why the Nordschleife is virtually a rollercoster ride :)

@Ringo
Are the Iracing guys taking pictures of the road itself as well, or just pics of the enviroment?
